Is democracy the best solution we can come up with in an attempt to be as free as possible in an unfree world? At present, that appears to be the case, though many purist libertarians believe that a world without any government at all would work very well.

Regardless, to concede that democracy is the best system of government man has been able to come up with does not rule out the possibility of a better solution at some future date. Our minds should always be open to this possibility if we sincerely want to make the world a better place for our children and grandchildren.

Until that better solution comes along, however, our focus should be on trying to maximize the present system. And maximizing the present system means acting on the belief that “that government is best which governs least.”
