The Art of Hair-splitting
Posted on June 8, 2017 by Robert Ringer
I’ve been a head-scratcher all my life. Day in and day out I hear and read things that the public seems to accept as fact, but which don’t ring true to me. A recent incident that has me scratching my head yet again is the uproar over President Trump’s tweet following the latest London terrorist attack, to wit:
“At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is ‘no reason to be alarmed!’”
This was in response to London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s public statement: “Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days. There’s no reason to be alarmed.”
To my amazement, everyone but me seems to be in agreement that Trump took Khan’s words out of context. What puzzles me is, what’s the difference between being alarmed by an increased police presence and being alarmed by an increase in terrorist attacks?
The increased police presence is a result of three terrorist attacks in the UK in the past ten weeks. So either way you say it, any halfway serious person who isn’t pushing an agenda gets the point.
To me, calling Trump’s words “out of context” is splitting hairs in order to put out yet another anti-Trump message. Are we to believe that Khan was saying you needn’t be alarmed by the increased police presence, but you should be alarmed by the terrorist attacks? I hardly think so.
The thought that millions of people apparently don’t understand that the increased police presence and the terrorist attacks are inextricably connected is kind of scary, because it raises the broader question, what else don’t they get? But, of course, we already know the answer to that, so in today’s Orwellian world, nothing should surprise us.
Had a Dirty Dem and not President Trump made that statement, nothing would be said. If President Trump were to say "Good morning America. What a great day in the USA" the Radic-Libs would be screaming in raging fury.
Somehow I keep finding myself thinking about the Penn & Teller Magic Act that focuses on mis-direction while the real story is going on in the other room. Are people that fascinated with a logical response to a British politician trying and failing to calm nerves?
Increased rhetoric and spinning. Heavily-biased Interpretations. "Hidden Agendas", deliberate “deception” and all….Lack of proper & true understanding of foundational issues and problems are essentially, the bane of folk’s difficulty & challenge, in this “post-truth”, “post-modern”, “relativity” era!
Thank God, Robert. I thought it was just me.
Possibly Sadiq Khan went to the same school of providing information to Londoners that Barrack Obama went to in the United States. A false sense of security, coupled with not being allowed to bear arms against those terrorizing their city should make them very scared indeed. Telling people it will be OK, while offering Kool-Aid as a refreshment should make them very nervous. Like you said, they should be alarmed (and armed).
The frightening comparison to Nazi Germany, where countless millions were gassed, within short distances of German neighborhoods, can not be overlooked. No… I would like to blame people like Mr Khan, but the truth is, the German people knew what was happening, but they chose to believe those who were telling them there is "no reason to be alarmed." Belief is a choice. Let's see what the British people choose.
Our homeland security had alerts during the Busch administration that were blue, green, and orange, with orange being the highest risk for an attack. I suppose it allowed one to prepare and arm themselves or stay away from a high risk area. For me the announcement of an orange alert instilled a certain amount of fear during that day. Either way it's presented, I think we are all aware of a possible threats everyday and think that it could happen here or there.
Move along…nothing to see here!
In London they should ban rental vans, rental cars and kitchen knives, problem would be solved; hence no more murders? In Boston they should ban all pressure cookers, again problem solved! In Texas, we have our own way of dealing with this scum, bring it on cowards, we ARE ARMED, try us…..
Yes, the response to that was idiotic. How about the response to the President's daughter wearing a $35 dress. If that wasn't stupid…
People, especially the "news" media, need something to think about besides how to bash Trump and his family.
Well said, and no, you were not alone… ◄Dave►
Imagine how this country would be if Robert Ringer was running things. Common sense would rule the day.
Had a Dirty Dem and not President Trump made that statement, this page would have been all over it.
That's only because a Dirty Dem would be agreeing with Khan, screeching about "Islamophobia" and blaming Christians for triggering the attack.
Trump's instinct to go after Khan, the Mayor of Londonstan, is spot on.
Western Civilization in Great Britain and the EU is on the road to extinction.
The U.S. is on the road to civil war. And because we have the guns and a unique hatred of Big Bully (aka Big Government) we actually do have a fighting chance to save our lifestyle.
The Britts don't recognize the human right to keep and bear a gun. And they are going to pay so dearly for that moral shortcoming. We nearly lost that fundamental human right here in the U.S., but the collectivists ( globalists) have been delt a severe blow with the election of Trump.
Now backstabbers like John McCain and Lindsey Gramcracker are attempting to impede Trump's agenda, even.g., tax plan, Obama repeal, and the Wall. But in this case, I'm happy to report, we have a fighting chance, too. Because the efforts to impeach Trump are not working, so far, and if they don't get rid of Trump soon, he might just get rid of them…..
Insane McCain attempting to implicate Trump during the Comey "testimony".

I appreciate what Mr. McCain went through at Hanoi Hilton, but his time has surely passed. Got to be another person out in Arizona??? Please??
Trump wrote, "The Art of The Deal".
McCain should retire and write, "The Art of the Backstab"…
Et tu Brute?
What else don't they get ? … I think they actually do get it. In this case the "art of hair splitting" is actually the "art of diversion and deception". These folks never take Trump's comments "out of context" do they ?
As a UK resident and no fan of Sadiq Khan I have to put you right here Robert. I would expect you of all people to understand how important it is for comments not to be taken out of context as it is very easy to precis a speech and give it an entirely different meaning. What Khan actually said was:
“My message to Londoners and visitors to our great city is to be calm and vigilant today," Mr Khan said. "You will see an increased police presence today, including armed officers and uniformed officers.
"There is no reason to be alarmed by this. We are the safest global city in the world. You saw last night as a consequence of our planning, our preparation, the rehearsals that take place, the swift response from the emergency services tackling the terrorists and also helping the injured.”
Misinformation is the biggest problem in journalism. I am a great fan of yours Robert but I really think you should have read the facts before putting out an article like this one.
Interesting to hear from a UK resident.
I would be extremely surprised if Mr Ringer had not read the quote fully in context before making the comment. Now, thanks to you, I have also do so. Here's my take: Re-reading Mr Khan's comment, fully in context, Mr Khan's statement is even more problematic.
Succinct and on target. Thumbs up.
The reality of the situation in the United States is that we are now living in an Anti-Trump Culture. There a certain number of people, maybe 1 million, maybe 5 million or more, I don't know the exact number, but the point is that there enough anti-trump people out there that we are going to hear a lot of stupidity when it comes to Trump. I don't even live in the U.S., I am a Canadian, but because I am on the internet every day, I've seen so many anti-trump articles it's become a complete joke. It's just simple hate, that's all. The anti-Trump article's head lines don't fool me. I don't read them at all. At first I would just to see if I was right about it being a biased article on Trump and I have been right all of the time, so it's obvious now that we live in an anti-Trump culture. I just ignore now. It really is a joke. Somebody has to tell this people to get a real life instead writing articles against Trump just because they don't like him. Now to sound repetitive, but it really has become a joke.
Joe. U so right, a walking cliche with trite expressions, I expect more from a real life parrot then whatever these clowns are about. They remind me of all the chumps in Willy Wonka and the Chocalate Factory thinking they are smarter than everyone else. Clear as mud tomfoolery chumps. Dur. Watching these idiots in a peevish snit, better than regular tv programming for sure.
Makes you wonder what Trump does that some people feel he just peed on their corn flakes. Delusions at their worst.
core belief is almost imposible to change,so the haters will continue to hate no matter what evidence is presented. Reason and the will to follow thru on commitments to truth and justice seems to be too old fashion in todays gadgit world. r.i.p adam west
Haters good for hating thats all they
got is hate. Truly a sad sight to see. I would smh, but that would be an insult, to the smh.
POW! SOCK! WOOPH! Indeed, RIP "Batman". As to the matter of this "HATE" toward Mr. Trump, my theory is that it is Satanic, pure and simple. These people believe in delusions and no matter of explanation will change their minds. They don't understand their hatred because it is so much bigger than themselves. Only death will separate them from their hatred. Let them hate as long as they stew in their own juices, but if they rise up to do physical harm, then let the massacre begin.
Any municipal official would have his hands full trying to deal with this situation. You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. Those in the public eye will always have enemies and detractors. I am endlessly entertained by how President Trump plays the media and the squalling left as he marches forward with his agenda. Carry on Mr. President.
