I had a dream last night that a new federal law was passed that put all elected officials — from the president on down — under oath at all times throughout their terms in office. In other words, there would be no need swear them in when they are called to testify before Congress, because they would already be under oath.

If they lied in a press conference, they would be guilty of perjury and subject to prosecution in a court of law — with a civilian jury. If they lied in a radio or television address to the American public, they would be guilty of perjury and subject to prosecution in a court of law — with a civilian jury. If they lied to in an interview, they would be guilty of perjury and subject to prosecution in a court of law — with a civilian jury. No exceptions.

The bottom line is that once a politician took the oath of office, he could not lie — period. What’s so unreasonable about demanding that elected officials be truthful at all times?

The payoff? In practical terms, it would mean that it would only be a matter of time until there would be no more politicians to rule us, because sooner or later all of them would be convicted of perjury.

It may only have been a dream, but what a delicious dream it was.
