There is much talk about the government’s latest equalizing scheme to force employers to give employees time off to spend with their families. It’s a nice thought, but just another area of life that is none of the government’s business. Spending more time with one’s family is an individual choice, and entrepreneurs and business owners, consciously or unconsciously, make the choice to sacrifice a lot of time with their families in an effort to try to get ahead financially.

So, is that a good or bad thing? In truth, it’s neither. The individual who chooses to spend more time with his family rather than working is neither morally superior nor inferior to the individual who chooses the opposite path. The fact is that how hard one chooses to work has nothing whatsoever to do with morality. It’s simply a personal choice — a trade-off.

Life is full of choices, and in a free society, your choices are none of my business and my choices are none of your business. I say, live and let live — and let people make their own choices when it comes to sacrifice, risk, and reward.
