Ted Koppel is out with a new book about the very real possibility that America’s entire power grid could be taken out at any time by Russia, China, or perhaps even Iran or ISIS. How well I remember the putdowns, even laughter, when I and many other “hard money” newsletter writers in the late seventies and early eighties warned about the possibility of a disaster of this magnitude.

Now, mainstream media types, politicians, and bureaucrats talk about it all the time. The problem is, as Koppel points out, there are zero plans in place either to prevent a cyberattack on America’s power grid or deal with it when it happens. But there are lots of plans being discussed about how to get the government involved in Fantasy Football.

Of course, back in the day, none of us had cyberattacks in mind when we wrote about a possible takedown of the U.S. power grid, so now the threat is much more real — and probably more imminent.

Within a few days after the demise of America’s power grid, people would be killing each other to secure food, water, and other basics for survival. Guns and ammunition would be perhaps the most valuable items a person could own. Overnight, we would become a savage society at the mercy of America’s enemies.

The one note of optimism is that both China’s and Russia’s economies are so intertwined with America’s that it’s unlikely they would want to end life (and, more important, business) in the U.S. as we know it. On the pessimistic side, Iran, ISIS, and other American-hating countries and groups would have no reservations — and no rules of engagement — about destroying America’s power grid and bringing the U.S. to its knees.

But not to worry. In the past couple of days, television offered up the World Series, pro football, college football, NBA basketball, soccer, hockey — and, of course, poker! Who has time to think about a loss of America’s power grid when there’s so much fun to be had?
