Dunce Luntz did his thing again Thursday night — those silly green and red lines going up and down on a chart, which, to the best of my knowledge, have never proven anything. But this time he went off the deep end when he asked his “focus group” who they thought won the debate. In unison, the entire room erupted with “Cruz!”
I find it interesting that he never explains how he picks the people in his focus groups. For all anyone knows, everyone in Thursday’s group may already have been a Cruz supporter.
Dunce then confidently exclaimed that Cruz had won the debate “overwhelmingly.” He has a right to his opinion, of course, but I must say that I thought it was Trump who won the debate overwhelmingly, so much so that he may have clinched the nomination.
On the issue of New York values, Cruz threw Trump a soft pitch he could not have imagined in his wildest dreams. He not only knocked Cruz to his knees with his answer, he also lifted his own posture to a whole new level.
On the eligibility issue, while I believe Cruz handled the matter as well as he possibly could have, it definitely puts a big question mark over his head. The unfortunate fact is that no one knows what the Founders meant by “natural born,” so Trump may very well be right when he says the Democrats will bring a lawsuit to tie Cruz up in court. Not a good thing, for sure.
Just to be clear, even though I don’t actively support anyone running for office, if I had to choose who I want my next ruler to be from amongst the GOP field, I’d pick either Trump OR Cruz — and I could possibly live (sort of) with a couple of other candidates. The only one I reject out of hand is Marco Rubio, who is a political snake in the grass.
So it is without bias that I say Trump won big Thursday night, while Cruz fell one or two notches. But, hey, I could be wrong. It will be interesting to see what the next polls have to say about it.
