A Special Message from Robert Ringer …
Some years ago, I recall a friend of mine commenting that “There are no guarantees in life. No matter how great your ideas and no matter how well you execute them, you can still end up broke.”
To which I responded, “That may be true, but my own experience has convinced me that the best insurance policy against that happening is to know how to write effective ad copy.” I meant it then, and I feel even more strongly about it today.
Of course, at the time I made this statement, I had already earned millions of dollars as a result of my ad-writing skills, which I acquired through reading, hard work, and a great deal of trial and error. The one thing that's certain is that had I not learned how to write income-producing ad copy, you never would have heard of Robert Ringer and would not be reading this message.
Copywriting — an Art or a Science?
The question has often been asked if copywriting is an art or a science. In truth, it's both. You have to learn the science and, through practice, become skilled at the art. And the first step toward that end is to study successful ads — not the kind of silly stuff you see on television or in magazines (automobiles, beer, car insurance … ad nauseam), but direct-marketing ads that have the potential to put big dollars in your bank account very quickly.
In fact, the only legitimate criterion for giving an ad a high grade is if it motivates people to take their credit cards out of their wallets and actually buy the product. In fact — and I speak from firsthand experience from reading hundreds of successful ads — one great headline … one great sentence … one great idea in any given ad can be worth a fortune to a creative marketer.
The original ad that set off a marketing light bulb in my head was written by the late Joe Karbo, one of the all-time greats in direct-marketing. His most famous (full-page) ad was titled: “MOST PEOPLE ARE TOO BUSY EARNING A LIVING TO MAKE ANY MONEY.” I learned far more from that one ad than I did from reading a dozen books on copywriting.
Karbo’s legendary ad produced sales of more than 1 million copies of his paperback book The Lazy Man’s Way to Riches. The book cost him 50 cents per copy to produce and sold for $10 — a 20 times markup! Even more amazing, he actually boasted about those figures in his ad.
I was very fortunate because, through sheer determination, I not only succeeded in meeting Joe Karbo but got to know him on a personal basis. Joe was a gracious and generous man, and, after a couple of meetings, he took me under his wing and shared his marketing knowledge with me.
He explained to me both the science and art behind his brilliant ad copy and was kind enough to point out, sentence by sentence, why the initial ads I had written for my first book had failed so miserably.
In my personal mentoring sessions with Joe, he also explained the psychology behind his brazen strategy to tell readers what a big markup he was making on each copy of his book and why it not only did not turn people off, but actually motivated them to buy.
Taking It to the Next Level
As a result of the success I experienced with my own books, I went on to publish a number of other unknown authors’ works and, through carefully crafted ad campaigns, marketed four of them to New York Times bestseller status.
In fact, I created such a stir in the mainstream publishing industry that The Wall Street Journal ran a front-page article about my copywriting accomplishments and Fortune magazine followed that up a month later with a three-page article about the success of my full-page ad campaigns.
Interestingly, the most successful ad I ever wrote was not even for one of my own books, but for a work titled Crisis Investing, which was written by a then unknown author. I say interesting, because it was a “doom-and-gloom” book that the sales force at Harper & Row (my distributor) insisted would never sell even 25,000 copies.
The ad copy I wrote for Crisis Investing flew in the face of conventional copywriting wisdom, because it featured a totally negative headline followed by equally negative ad copy. I later heard through the grapevine that the Harper & Row sales force was absolutely livid when they saw my ad.
P.S. The ad worked so well that Crisis Investing jumped from obscurity to #1 on The New York Times bestseller list within a few weeks after publication and remained in the #1 position for 15 consecutive weeks. It also became the year’s biggest-selling nonfiction book. Not bad for a work that Harper & Row's sales force believed had no chance of achieving even modest success.
My conclusion: Contrary to popular belief, mainstream publishers know absolutely nothing about marketing books!
Since those heady days of long ago, I’ve been fortunate to make a great deal of money on many other kinds of products and services — from cellular telephone to newsletter publishing — by using the same ad-writing strategies that had elevated me to bestselling author status. The reason these copywriting strategies work just as well today as they did many years ago is because, though technology continues to change at an ever-accelerating pace, human nature, psychology, and universal principles remain constant.
That’s not to say that I haven’t had my share of bombs. In fact, I don’t know of any great copywriter who hasn’t written many ads that have failed. After all, failure is part of the human experience. What sets great copywriters apart from the pack is that they learn through experience and consistently produce a far greater number of successful ads than unsuccessful ads — and, of course, some blockbuster ads along the way.
I should also point out that it’s critically important to develop the ability to objectively analyze the reasons why an unsuccessful ad failed, then use what you learn to improve your copywriting skills for future ads. Thanks to the help of Joe Karbo, that's certainly what I did with the early ads I wrote for my first book.
