Sixty-seven years ago today Harry Truman pulled off perhaps the biggest upset in presidential election history when he defeated former New York governor Thomas Dewey.

As you’re probably aware, Dewey was such a heavy favorite that some newspapers prematurely ran headlines declaring him the victor. It was downright embarrassing for them.

The story of Truman’s upset victory is not only inspiring, it’s also a reminder to avoid premature celebrations, which are an invitation to embarrassment.

Your best bet is to be cool, calm, and collected, and never forget that you’re not through until you’ve crossed all the t’s, dotted all the i’s, and the check has cleared the bank.
