On Thanksgiving Day, we’re supposed to be thankful for the many blessings we have. But today the scourge of victimization is so entrenched in American society that it’s difficult for many people to be thankful for anything. Instead, they prefer to dwell on some great injustice they’ve suffered in the past.

Thanksgiving Day is a good time to accept the reality that the past is etched in stone and can never be changed, so there’s no rational reason for anyone to allow it to destroy his future as well. The only contribution the past can make to a person’s happiness is through the experience it has given him, and it’s up to him to convert that experience into wisdom.

The inability to let go of the past is a self-imposed imprisonment, an imprisonment from which only the individual can free himself. The future lies on the other side of the prison door of the past, a door every person possesses the power to open and step through at any time.

And a good start in that direction is for all of us to be truly grateful on Thanksgiving Day for all the good things we have in our lives.
