Tyranny of the Majority

By Robert Ringer - Monday, October 24, 2011

As liberals go, I actually had a touch of like for Joltin Joe Biden in his Senate days.  But since he got in bed with the Marxists in the Executive Branch, it’s become increasingly difficult to give him a pass.  Even so, I feel compelled to cut Joe some slack by blaming his maniacal remarks on mitigating circumstances — the fact that he’s a bona fide idiot.

Thus, when the Delaware Dimwit said that paying taxes is the most patriotic thing an already overtaxed American citizen can do, it wasn’t out of malice.  Truth be known, I don’t believe he has any idea why he says such things.  As near as I can tell, he simply appears to be on progressive autopilot.

Now Biden wants to increase the national debt even more by insisting that Congress pass the latest mini-stimulus, warning that if it doesn’t, there won’t be enough police to prevent rapes and robberies.  Hmm … how weird.  Offhand, I can’t recall a single instance where a law enforcement officer prevented a rape or robbery … but, hey, there’s always a first time.

In any event, whether nonsensical statements like this are the result of stupidity, lack of knowledge, or malevolence, be prepared for them to come at you in torrents over the next twelve months.  With Republican presidential candidates taking bites out of each others’ arms, imagine what it’s going to be like when the Democrats take aim at the Republicans’ soon-to-be-known compromise candidate, whomever that might be.

The question no Republican seems interested in asking is:  What gives any elected official the authority to increase taxes on American citizens whenever he has an urge to hand money to selected groups of his choosing?  The Constitution doesn’t say that it’s the duty of the American citizen to play the role of a docile cow waiting to be milked whenever politicians decide they need more money.

One of the Democrats’ favorite new talking points is that recent polls show that 80 percent of Americans favor a new tax on millionaires and billionaires.  Gosh, really?  I would never have thought the average person would favor taxing America’s wealthiest citizens.  Duh … of course most people would like to see a tax on someone other than themselves!  Why not, so long as the government doesn’t tax them.

But, guess what.  The Founding Fathers set up the rules of the game in such a way as to specifically prevent America from becoming a tyranny-of-the-majority nation.  Which is why polling questions about increasing taxes are irrelevant.  Every person on this earth has unlimited desires, but those desires don’t give him a claim on the assets of others.

Lest anyone forget, America is supposed to be a republic.  And in a true republic, the fact that 80 percent of the population favors committing aggression against a minority — including the minority of people who are the most financially successful — should carry no weight when it comes to legislation.

The fact is that majority rule violates the rights of others if it forces them to go along with actions with which they do not agree.  Progressives would like us to believe that majority rule is morally virtuous.  The reality, however, is that majority rule is moral cannibalism, because it makes it possible for one group of people, simply by being in the majority, to do whatever it wishes to those in the minority.  In fact, theoretically speaking, majority rule could validate literal cannibalism!

The basic premise of majority rule is that good is defined as “that which is best for the greatest number of people.”  Such a premise, however, is so vague as to be meaningless. Every individual has a unique set of circumstances, unique needs and desires, unique personality traits, unique fears, and unique ambitions.

And it is each person’s uniqueness that dictates which actions are best for him. That’s why progressive terms such as social justice and the common good are nothing more than red herrings.

The same moral logic holds true for corporations, since they are the property of individuals, often large numbers of individuals.  But some folks in Lynchburg, Tennessee don’t see it that way.  Charles Rogers, a 75-year-old retiree and self-described “concerned citizen” of Moore County, where distillery giant Jack Daniel’s is located, recently created a stir when he said, “We are entitled [my emphasis] to more money from the only industry in the county —  Jack Daniel’s distillery.”

To which Tommy Beam, general manager of Jack Daniel’s, responded, “That’s not free enterprise and that’s not what this country was built on.  I saw a quote the other day that said that a person used to look at a successful person and say, ‘Now, what do I have to do to become like that?’  Whereas now they might look at him and say, ‘What can I do to get what they’ve got?’”

Well said.  Nevertheless, the Moore County Council passed a measure asking the Tennessee Assembly for enabling legislation to put the question of a per-barrel tax on Jack Daniel’s whiskey on the ballot.  That’s right, the entitlement crowd in Moore County is coming after its number-one benefactor, Jack Daniel’s, the company that put Lynchburg on the map over the past century.

It’s a classic case of tyranny of the majority.  Forget the fact that Jack Daniel’s is by far the biggest employer in Moore County.  Forget the fact that it’s a magnet that draws 250,000 tourists (who spend money!) each year to Lynchburg.  Forget the fact that the company already pays 60 percent of the price of a bottle of whiskey in taxes.

Clearly, the class-warfare battle-cry in the hinterlands is pretty much the same as it is 900 miles to the more sophisticated northeast in the Occupy Wall Street protest:  “I want more, so you have to give it to me.”  Sounds rational to me.

Move over Greece, here we come.

Please. . .someone tell me the end-date of the progressive stupidity that has enveloped the USA.

  2. topeka says:

    Robert,

    Excellent article.

What do you think would happen though if the music stops now?

We have gone down the progressive road so far, we can hardly recognize ourselves.

If look back on our culture, our country, and our community, the law of Self Fulfilling Prophecy has been at work so long we have become, or we are close to becoming, exactly what Progressives claim we are.

If one substitutes Progressive-Free loaders for the working middle-class, and Progressive-Billionaires for the entrepreneurs of old, the picture isn’t far from Progressive visions of America.

Yes, it’s Projection which is why we are becoming what the Progressives project.

The industrious, creative, productive individual has always been out-numbered by the Prodigal Sons. The genius of America unleashed the Individual and changed the world. Progressives though have turned back the clock.

For good men everywhere, I hope it’s not too late. But I’m not holding my breath.

I don’t cut “Joe” Blow any slack. He knows what he’s doing.

Regarding “Republican presidential candidates taking bites out of each others’ arms,” ha, ha, ha, they know what they are doing, too. Of course, Ron Paul is the exception, and, frankly, he has never looked so good. In fact, I’ve never seen Dr. Paul in such fine form as yesterday on Meet The Depressed:

    http://www.ronpaul2012.com/2011/10/23/ron-paul-explains-conservatism-on-meet-the-press/

Wow, is Paul on message or what? Furthermore, he is the only one who has an honest economic plan to restore America. Yes, love that Paul. He is effectively educating and changing the course of the debate and the course of history. Even if he doesn’t win, he wins by telling the truth.

And what about 9 9 9?—and other such frauds? Ha, ha, ha, the “bites” on Cainesian economics have been many.

Yes, the last Republican debate looked like something out of a 007 movie when Richard Kiel, who played the 7’2 villain “Jaws,” showed up for lunch……ha, ha, ha. Boy, is this election year going to be fun to watch.

Of course 007 (aka Ron Paul) had all the right moves. Moreover, win or lose, in the end, Paul will be proven right.

By the way, excellent job on the Jack Daniels story, Mr. Ringer. I’m going to borrow that story to help young people understand the difference between attacking honest capitalism and crony capitalism (fascism).

Everybody: Please support Ron Paul and Gary Johnson, because they are spreading the truth.

  4. Carolyn says:

    Unfriggin believable, isn’t it!

But, I do NOT think any of this is without deeper, more sinister, puppet-pullers. It would be bad enough, if it were simply ‘stupidity,’ but the power elite have always preyed upon the bleating sheep.

They are, successfully, pitting liberals against conservatives, while the REAL culprit/s are using the ‘in-fighting’ to distract everyone, while the REAL agenda remains hidden from all but the very, very savvy.

What government, any government, has EVER genuinely had the people’s good in their hearts and minds! I submit the answer is NEVER. Never have, never will.

They (governments) steal from the rich corporations and the poor to foster their agenda — doesn’t matter to them. Whatever works!

Domination is their end-game strategy. And creating a great divide is part of that strategy. How brilliant! But it’s seems so obvious to me.

As Robert says, the have nots don’t aspire to work to achieve what the “rich man” has. They think they’re entitled to what the rich man/corps have! How utterly ridiculous on the face of it.

If we had a government that was really a republic (instead of a nanny state to foster the ‘real agenda’)it would PROTECT the individual right of everyone to work hard if they want to or be lazy if they choose … and live with the consequence of both!

We’ve wandered so far away from limited government. Protect us from enemies, both foreign and domestic. We desperately NEED to shut it down. And start over!

    How?

    • Reality Seeker says:

      “How?”

“Civil Disobedience,” by Henry David Thoreau.

The Tea Party and other arm-chair liberty-lovers better start learning the lesson that “Occupy” is demonstrating; namely, don’t protest without civil disobedience.

      Boycott. Strike. Disobey.

A disobedient vote is worth a thousand paper votes.

      • Scott says:

Indeed there comes a time which “tries men’s souls,” and each must make the decision to submit or resist.

Each of us has all the rights God grants, they cannot be taken from us. It’s just that exercising these natural rights often comes at a price. Nevertheless, they can only be surrendered, not taken.

      • Dan says:

        Please elaborate.

        • Scott says:

          Some ideas for resisting:
          - take advantage of every single loophole and deduction
          - start a business and open a Health Savings Account
          - create as much wealth trhough capital gains (esp. long-term) and as little through wages
          - When a buureaucract calls, you call, when they write you write etc.
          - Pay quarterly estimates and make them as low as possible. In other words, keep your money as long as possible.
          - support Ron Paul and other like him
          - Read Robert Ringer
          - Outsource as much of your own work as possible and preferably abroad
          - Support “right to work” by all means
          - Stay out of debt
          - Make sure that around 10% of your net worth is in tangible assets (think gold, land etc.)
          - Move to a state which has no income tax
          - Know and exercise all elements of the Bill of Rights
          - Do not voluntarily waive any of your fundamental rights
          - Keep and bear a lawyer and know how to use it
          …I can go on.

  5. Don Stevens says:

This was a great article because its prescience is so accurate that it will smart for some after it cpmes to pass, but only with those who have more attention span that a moth around a light bulb. AS a side cooment the new social unrest is a test of the power of the social network, and now it is expanding globally, exponentially. Remember Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds radio broadcast, that was the saem kind of test to see how effective that media was in those days, now, watch what havoc this new medium creates! Could the U.S. become the new cold war Russia? What’s in your wallet??

  6. The Resolute Voice says:

It’s not “move over, Greece”. Rather, it’s “move over, Karl Marx.” Here comes 1984 in 2000 and whatever.

When you don’t educate the populace to think for itself and have honest skills and don’t teach history that happened more than 6 months ago, become embroiled in celebrity chasing and cultural “Best of 10″ thinking, what can you expect? You get major articles on CNN that analyze why computer voices are female and not male – a gender “crisis”.

These are all examples of where we are now – totally divided by class warfare, gender politics, envy for what someone else has earned by his or her hard work, and the desire to steal what we want or simply “legislate” it to be given to us.

Once we get all of that of course, what comes next? Read some history.

  7. Gramma says:

Our grandchildren(conservative or not) will be enveloped by the acts and attitudes of the Progressives today.
We must remember that God has always been in control and always will be, but too many men are trying to say otherwise–much to their chagrin at Judgment Day.

    • rick smith says:

hey grammma – if this is what it is to be a man – i’d rather be a stain on the carpet – never believe a man on what it is to be a man – and women know even less , look at who they choose to take into their beds – just another male with the necesary equipment……

  8. “The Constitution doesn’t say that it’s the duty of the American citizen to play the role of a docile cow waiting to be milked whenever politicians decide they need more money.” Robert Ringer

Furthermore…. if you’ll do a bible study on lawful taxes, that goes beyond “render unto Caesar,” you’ll discover the Old Testement points out only a government that’s a tyrant will tax a people more than the 10% tithe G-d Himself requires. You might want to bounce that off Jewish Joe Lieberman, Roman Catholic Joe Biden, Mormon Mitt Romney, Methodist Rick Perry, Baptist Herman Cain and …… and the communist Muslim in The White House. Kevan Rowlee

  9. Scott says:

Imagine a “free” people allowing the insidious 16th Amendment to the Constitution to be the law of the land!

‘The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.”

The central government should never be allowed to lay and collect a direct [income] tax, esp. without apportionment. The best way for the Federal Government to derive revenues is through an apportioned tax on the states tied to the national GDP in the year following the GDP calculations. Duties, imposts and excise…that’s it, that’s all!

  10. After listening to the liberal networks and channels, I thought millionairesandbillionaires was a single word.:)

  11. It is noteworthy that, James Madison is one of the more obscure figures among the founding fathers. Benjamin Franklin, the propagandist is the First American, New World Aristocrats, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson who coveted Native American land that the Royal Proclamation of 1763 of George III protected, are hailed as heroes. Yet the wisest founding father, James Madison who created the Bill of Rights, is disdained just like the bill of rights itself. So why does Tommy Beam not sell his stocks and resign in protest? Where is his spine? Well done is soon done. You can not set limits later. Well spoken is soon spoken. And he did retort to Charles Rogers promptly. But words are only the shadows of deeds. If he is to be considered a manly man, he should swifly follow up with punitive action. Remember, when you can not back up your words, people think you are a joke. Deeds are the fabric of life, and words are merely its shadows, this is what timid Americans seem not to get. Like Hillary Clinton, “urging” Pakistan to self-cannibalize, instead of just moving our Iraqi and Afghani forces into Pakistan. (Pakistan is China’s proxy to nuke India, and we should relieve the only free republic in the region.) I am tired of words.

  12. frank says:

    dear right again robert:

all is well with your essay in substance this time except for one thing….joe biden might not have the right stuff to
get elected president,is not good for the usa at all, but he is not dumb and fits right into the role of flaming liberal vp…his position
a heart beat away from the presidency,
eventual fat pensions as member of the congress and now vp, and likely dream of his to patiently enter the white house by the back door(or any way he can get it) might all end up proving the power of persistence and murphy’s law…and outdo many successful businessmen and women..
    in power and welath…

there is a saying that a people end up with the government they deserve…a scary thought when hillary is secretary of state…obama president and biden as vp…
i shudder to think about what the next act will bring…
in this emerging nightmare of american history…the antithesis of the reagan era of prosperity….

  13. Kendra says:

    majority rule = mob rule

With one exception: mob rule doesn’t try to hide its avarice under a cloak of “for the good of all.”

  14. Obviosly the sane one around here! says:

WOW what is the matter with you people?

Let’s not tax the rich! Then MAYBE they’ll help us out!

    How about this -
The top tax rate in the late 1930′s was 75 percent!
During the war it went to 95 Percent (1941)
It STAYED at that rate until Kennedy lowered it back to 75 percent in the early 1960′s.

The reason the DIDN’T COMPLAIN was that they had tons of write offs, loop holes and Breaks! Which lowered the 75 percent rate to 35 percent (40 PERCENT WRITEOFFS!!).

Then Reagan LOWERED the top rate to 35 percent BUT LEFT ALL THE BREAKS IN PLACE!!

Now when you hear a company paid NO TAXES, that sounds good to you! THE STILL GET THE RIGHT OFFS!!

They also ship their profitable divisions overseas and pay lower taxes in other countries. Then ship the losing divisions back to the USA.

But this STILL sounds right and good to you!

The rich get the breaks and you don’t! But they have convinced you this is better for you!

From after the war to the reign of Reagan – AMERICA PROSPERED! jobs were abundant – prices were low only dad had to work. Life was good!

Now the Rich complain and you fall for the crap they peddle! Keep listening to the Rich people (like the one who authors this blog). They have you hypnotized into believe that they are having a hard time. But they are sitting on RECORD profits and are keeping them in overseas accounts to avoid USA taxes!

Business has never done better! They cut the workforce which increased their profits, have ZERO plans to rehire.

    • Scott says:

Obviously: Why do you try to arrange deck chairs on the ship of state when there is so much wrong with the sinking boat?

A loophole here, a loophole there, a few basis points here and there etc., etc. The shell game has been going on for eons and I suspect will continue long after you and I are gone and forgotten. Think bigger, much bigger: INCOME TAX, FROM WHATEVER SOURCE DERIVED, IS IMMORAL!

I’ve got news for you; the rich don’t need us to believe anything. They don’t need you or me to believe anything…we have no power, period. You’re blaming the wrong actor. Business will always find a way to work within any system. It isn’t the corporations or any individuals who are stealing from you Obvious, it is the elected and appointed in our society who steal. In fact, that is the very purpose of government – to confiscate wealth. And it it the producer in society which resists that act of theft…and the cat and mouse game goes on. Or as Sonny Bono once wrote in song: “and the beat goes on…”

  15. Look what “majority rule” has achieved in Africa, one man, one vote, once! Of the two most sophisticated and successful economies in Africa, Rhodesia and South Africa, one absolutely ruined and one on the same slippery slope.

Majority rule, aided and abetted by the West achieved in a short time what a terrorist war could not.

  16. “A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.
    Edward Abbey

    jadavison.wordpress.com

  17. Robert, your talk of majority rule reminded me of a poem I came across 30+ years ago. Unfortunately, I have no idea who wrote it, but it seems to fit Obama:

    Majority Rule

His party was the Brotherhood of Brothers,
and there were more of them than of the others.
That is, they constituted that minority
which formed the greater part of the majority.

Within the party, he was of the faction
that was supported by the greater fraction.
And in each group, within each group, he sought
the group that could command the most support.

The final group had finally elected
a triumvirate whom they all respected.
Now of these three, two had the final word,
because the two could overrule the third.
One of these two was relatively weak,
so one alone stood at the final peak.

He was THE GREATER NUMBER of the pair
which formed the most part of the three that were
elected by the most of those whose boast
it was to represent the most of most
of most of most of the state -
or of the most of it at any rate.

He never gave himself a moment’s slumber
but sought the welfare of the greatest number.
And all the people, everywhere they went,
knew to their cost exactly what it meant
to be dictated to by the majority.

But that meant nothing – THEY were the minority.
