The Unvarnished Truth

By Robert Ringer

As the U.S. edges ever closer to coming face to face with the consequences of its $100+ trillion of debt and “unfunded liabilities,” the cries from the never-give-up-the-fight progressives over “unfettered” capitalism are becoming increasingly louder. The coalition of communists, Marxists, socialists, progressives (a.k.a. “liberals”) — along with those who are simply envious, ignorant, or angry — are calling for capitalist scalps.

They say that the worsening depression (euphemistically referred to by politicians and media pundits as “recession” — and one that is on the verge of a rebound, at that) is a result of capitalism run amok. More regulation and more redistribution of wealth is the only thing that can save America, right? Not quite.

If you want to give a true-believing progressive apoplexy, just tell him the unvarnished truth: The overriding reason that the United States has devolved into a financial basket case is too much regulation, too much taxation, too much printing of fiat currency, too much borrowing, too much government interference in the marketplace, too much nannyism.

You can go right down the list — Social Security, Medicare, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families — all of these programs drain capital from the productive free market, which makes everyone worse off. Another unvarnished truth, one that very few people want to hear, is: The government has no Constitutional — or moral — authority to operate any wealth-transfer program, no matter how worthy some people may believe it to be. Unfortunately, the idea that a politician’s self-proclaimed compassion gives him the right to take the property of law-abiding citizens and give it to others is a perversity that has come to be accepted by a large percentage of the population.

A few politicians dance around the edges of this issue, but none seem to be willing to speak out on it unequivocally, which is why the tea party movement is so refreshing. Many politicians have finally said that they’ve heard the message of the tea party people loud and clear. But, in truth, they haven’t.

Even Sarah Palin, whose basic ideology seems to be pretty much on target, avoided being specific in her keynote address at the tea party convention in Nashville. Like all other conservatives, Governor Palin said that government has to cut spending, which is fine. But, also like all other conservatives, she did not specifically mention Social Security and Medicare, the two programs that, all by themselves, are 100 percent guaranteed to bankrupt America — no matter what other spending rollbacks government implements.

I’ll cut the governor some slack here, because it probably wasn’t a good time for her to get specific and take on the sacred cows. But hear me on this, Washington: Sooner or later, someone is going to have to get serious with a public that is addicted to nanny statism — a public that doesn’t want to hear about economic reality, much less morality.

So I end this article with the same question (borrowed from an article by Thomas Friedman, no less) I’ve asked many times before: Who will tell the people the truth? Right now, no politician has the courage to advocate the phasing out of all wealth-redistribution programs, because they do not believe there is a constituency for cutting entitlements. (Note that I used the term phasing out, because to pull the rug out from under Social Security and Medicare recipients cold turkey would cause too much pain and suffering.)

Which is why the tea party people are probably America’s last hope. What I believe most of the tea party people are saying is “No!” — no to any kind of wealth redistribution … no to any kind of government involvement in health care … no to any kind of tax increases … no to any kind of “green” legislation … no to any kind of new regulations. No! No! No!

If so, strong voices in the tea party movement must speak up and deliver that message loud and clear to both politicians and voters. If they do not, or if a majority of voters will not accept it, then the question will be not if, but when, the U.S. will experience a complete financial collapse — and Americans will lose what is left of their freedom.

Admittedly, it’s a tough message to deliver to everyday Americans, but someone must be willing not only to step forward and do it, but explain, in clear, easy-to-understand terms, why it is not in their best interest to continue to receive government benefits of any kind. Put simply, the public has to be taught that the price of unsustainable wealth-redistribution programs is servitude. And, like it or not, that’s the unvarnished truth.

    Robert,

You are correct about just about everything that you have written in this piece. While I agree with your sentiments when you state: “Put simply, the public has to be taught that the price of unsustainable wealth-redistribution programs is servitude. And, like it or not, that’s the unvarnished truth,” I sadly believe that those who are accustomed to “wealth-distribution programs” are not even aware that they are experiencing “servitude.” Many of them know nothing else. For too many Americans, we have become a society where a sense of personal responsibility has been replaced by a sense of entitlement. I am not sure what the answer to this is, but we are in for a bleak future if someone does not quickly come up with a realistic answer.

    Joe

  2. RogerDue says:

Agreed. Now I have a suggestion for you. Why don’t you get yourself invited to one of the Tea Party gatherings and start laying out these ideas and try to get others to step up to the plate? How about it?

  3. jim says:

I just finished rereading “How … Happiness … Collapse … Western Civilization” this morning. It’s encouraging to know that at least someone’s thinking and ethics haven’t changed or been corrupted in 27 years. Too bad so many of our political leaders who claim to be conservative freedom lovers have moved so far to the left. I’m forwarding your voice of sanity to most everyone I know and many say they have subscribed. As you said in 1983, educating the folks is our only salvation from dictatorship. I am worried about what emergency (lie) might be used to suspend elections either this year or in 2012. The “Saul, Barack and Me” series certainly puts everything into an immediate perspective.

You wrote, “A few politicians dance around the edges of this issue, but none seem to be willing to speak out on it unequivocally …” Leaders in America’s Independent Party (AIP) do it every day. For a list of candidates of various political parties who boldly speak the unvarnished truth, see “America’s Candidates – The AIP ‘Reagan List’” at http://www.aipnews.com/talk/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=7771.

  5. Reality seeker says:

You want the truth? Like Jack said, you can’t handle the truth.

Sarah Palin just endorsed Rick Perry for Texas Governor over Debra Medina. That tells you everything truthful you need to know about Sarah the spineless barracuda. Debra Medina is a genuine Tea Party constitutionalist and a true grass roots candidate that would lead the Tea Party in the right direction—away from the phonies like John The Progressive McCain ..

Palin sweet-talks, panders, and then co-opts the Tennessee Tea Party right into the Republican Party, and then turns right around and snubs Debra Medina. Palin is after power—period.

Sarah Palin looks sexy with her AR-15, but you know what? The more I hear her talk, the less I trust her not to shoot a true freedom lover in the back.

Listen people, times are going to get serious, deadly serious. So that means it’s time to get some discernment. Stop listening to the same old rhetoric of the John McCains and the Sarah Palins of this world, and start supporting people like Debra Medina.

Wake up: Sarah Palin is George Bush’s sister republican. We don’t need a third Bush for President.

  6. The Total Idiot says:

Directly on track. Compare the operation of the Federal Reserve, as regards debt, to the “Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade, and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery” of April 30, 1957.

We are offered as surety for a debt, our times of labor are neither limited nor defined, and our labor is never placed toward the elimination of the principle of the debt involved, nor even toward the interest.

  7. arms merchant says:

Not only would going “cold-turkey” on entitlements entail pain and suffering, it could collapse the economy and drive us into a second depression. Not sure how you deal with the inevitable demand-deflation cycle as all that government fiat money is pulled out of the system.

One concept might be to start private accounts for each SS recipient that would be supplemented by a fiat money subsidy that would gradually be phased out. But I don’t see how we could avoid wild instability of the financial markets in a transition to real money. Any ideas?

  8. MeMeMe says:

According to the U.S. Constitution I looked at, under Article 1, section 8 (1), it says,”The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises….

After they have title to the money, it is no longer “taxpayer money”, but government money to do anything legal with it.

I get the danger in what you’re suggesting, but from where I sit, taxation is legal.

  9. deusimplicitus says:

    Robert,
In one of your books, you included a witticism from Ashleigh Brilliant that sums up many people’s attitude and perspective today…..
“I have abandoned my search for truth and am now looking for a good fantasy”.

Bad news for those people..truth and hard reality always win over the course of time. Always, no exceptions.

The examples from every page of history, the science, math, and even politics are prolific.

Liberals, progressives, democrats, socialists, communists, etc.,
promise people visions of unattainable Utopia’s and breaking the laws of nature, especially the laws of economics, and of course many people looking for a life with the least possible personal responsibility, foolishly believe and follow the fantasy pulling the rest of us down into their fantasy created made manifest Orwellian dystopia with them.

    Mr. Ringer,
I suggest that if you really want to find out what is coming for the english speakingg people of this world, including the USA UK AUS. you should read the articles at “the trumpet.com’
    Very interesting reading.

  11. michalenc says:

I agree with everything you have stated. What can I do to help stop this “soon to happen” tragedy from becoming a true reality. It seems so unbalanced. We have the Law makers, the politicians, and the Media actively praising and encouraging this process to not only continue but to become progressively worse. They treat the people (God fearing conservatives) whose ideology this country was founded on, as crazies. Granted some of them are taking to radical strategies. However, it seems the less radical practices are not effective.

On another note-but in a similar vein, what can America do about BHO and his Birth certificate issue? A simple situation, and there seems to be NO clear cut answer or process. Why is this being such a simple issue, being dragged out, and not dealt with? And shouldn’t those who were closest to him, his wife, Pelosi, Biden, Frank and etc. also be tried for covering up the truth?

  12. MikeJoyous says:

I think that the tea party folks have to embrace Rand’s thoughts about the ethics of redistribution. I mean that redistribution is stealing and that theft is wrong. I think that argument has to be made again, and yet again. Ethics trumps economics insofar as the determination of a civilization goes.

  13. pfolkler says:

Robert, there is one “politician” who does speak the unvarnished truth: Ron Paul. I understand you disagree with him on foreign policy and the so called “war on terror”…

By the by, can someone explain to me how you can declare war on a “Tactic”? A method of war where the weak fight back successfully against the strong?

It makes no more sense than the “war on drugs”.

But then the purpose of these is not the defense of the United States, just as it is not the protection of our children from drug abuse.

It is all about power. You will never ever have liberty when you give others the ability to start endless wars in your name.

The Homeland Security fascist state is a direct result of the war on terror.

You want respect for private property? Just as soon as they root out the very last terrorist and we all enter the promised land of safety.

The welfare/warfare state is one hydra, you can not allow one branch to continue if you want to kill it.

Government is FORCE, nothing more. Thus we have the current administration policy of murder of US citizens, if they are deemed to be enemy combatants.

If that is ok with you all, then we are doomed to continue exactly as we are.
