Excellent comments. Last year, I watched some great period (1932) video footage of the marches on Washington.
I don't completely agree with your conclusions. I conclude that if history repeats itself, and something like the 1932 event occurs again, then look for an increased amount of blood shed. This time around, violence will beget violence until we reach an historical climax.

kirkreeves,

Excellent comments. The bonus army was 43,000 military and civilian wives and friends. Only 17,000 were actual Veterans. Their cause was not to claim bonuses that the government refused to pay BUT to get their bonuses EARLY. Their support from the Army was not as great as it would be today.
He mentions the Russian Revolution but not the French. Nor the Hungarian Revolt.. which was successful until The Soviets changed their minds and invaded.
There are others he fails to mention, but the mere fact that that they had a success does not mean they were not bloody.
Although Roosevelt did not want to give the Vets their bonuses early... the final chapter was that Congress DID give it to them.
Armed rebellion should be a 'last resort' but it should be done at some point while it can still be effective. This government no longer fears the people. The people are starting to fear the government. That is the beginning to the end of a Democratic Republic. kirkreeves is a 'lying by obmission' troll that reveals his true nature in the last few words of his entry and I quote... "and we still are in power"

kirkreeves talks about ‘knowing history’ but it seems either he does not know much or is conveniently “forgetting’ facts that do not prove his case. It has happened in lots of different countries including this one. In 1932, army veteran marched upon Washington and was know as The bonus Army. They encamped upon Washington for about a month and a half until the powers that be got tired and used the army to disbursed the protesters violently. Several of the bonus army were killed. The worst that happened was it probably was the final straw that cost Herbert Hoover the election. However
things were still bad and a coup was attempted against Roosevelt but failed. Read General Smedley report to congress if you want to know more. In Countries where it has been tried it marked the start of a long civil war. The Winter March on the Czar palace by the peasants marked the start of the long and bloody civil war in Russia of what is known as the Russia Revolution. And things turned out worst for the next 50 years.
Since the Bonus Army march on Washington, this government has gotten a lot better at suppressing dissent. I think the solution might be secession but an armed march on Washington will be playing into the powers that be hands. A peaceful unarmed march like the one you were in last month will not change things. It made you feel good, but tell me, besides that, what has changed? A business facing a protest like that would change immediately. Not Government. Let the fools march and have them think they are doing something. By doing so, we will make sure nothing changes and we still are in power.

I can understand the man’s feeling but knowing history it won’t work. isPermaLink="false">http://blog.robertringer.com/?p=912#comment-2876

Well, we have two basic views in this country. One camp views the Constitution as the supreme law of the land and notices the Federal Government has crossed over it many, many times. The other camp prefers a more progressive, European type socialist view or to take it further, a communistic one.
The first see freedom meaning that we have a "freedom to be what we want" where generally it is upon ourselves to find out what are abilities are and succeed at what we can do. There is no guarantee of success but if you work hard and apply yourself, you can get what you need. The other camp sees "freedom" in their eyes where the government protects you be giving you "freedom from" things like freedom from homelessness, unemployment, health bills and so on. The very bad thing with the latter is that to get that, you have to take away resources the people earn by working hard to pay for all of these programs. It is also a redistribution of wealth. You also add insult to injury where in such a system, the government ends up telling you what to do from the time you're born until you die. I remember in high school back in 1985 when I graduated, we had a class comparing the USSR to the United States and this was taught to us.
This really started with the Progressive movement around a hundred years ago. It accelerated in the late 1960's and when 2000 rolled around, the divisions are clear and I say both sides have become irreconcilable. Our leaders in Washington do not get it and they plan on shoving healthcare, "cap and trade" and other such programs on us even though most people are against it. This is a recipe for critical mass and something will blow if this is not stopped. I say we have a chance with what Glenn Beck is trying to do, but I think that is the last chance. The future, I do not know, but the United States could "balkanize" into two basic faction, much like one column Walter Williams wrote in 2000.

Well, we have two basic views in this country. isPermaLink="false">http://blog.robertringer.com/?p=912#comment-2874

Thanks for sharing that email from J.M. The time may or may not be short; that all depends on what you mean by short.
"I hope for a peaceful return, but I think little of its likelihood and truly expect a full blown war of independence." I agree with that thought, and like this man, I've intellectually and viscerally known it would come down to this.
I also concur with the following: "There is no point in doing anything if we stop short of a complete reinstatement of the Constitution, meaning that we abolish two-thirds of the federal government, return all those usurped powers back to the states, and the states become sovereign again, as they were when the Constitution was ratified and the confederated republic was established."
Anything short of the above only means more "muddling through." And more muddling is not something worth dieing for. If we're going to die, then it's time to go for all or nothing.
Moreover: "I don’t believe that anything short of war teaches all those things to the depth necessary for a people to assume sovereignty over themselves and their nation."
It's nice to read an email from someone who is truly awake. If more individuals wake up, like this man, then liberty has a chance. I still remain skeptical that this will happen anytime very soon. I'm sticking by my theory that more pain is needed and more individuals have to come to the point of being willing to die for what they believe in, because, like this man, "they have nothing to lose."
I would like to say one thing to this man, if he's reading these comments. Don't let the socialists provoke you into the first act of violence. Let us not be remembered as the first to draw blood.

Thanks for sharing that email from J.M. We're stocking up and have already picked out our place of retreat/fortification. One benefit of Colorado, there's plenty of mountains. I've thought for a couple of years now that as a nation, we're too far gone for recovery. The only way this nation can once again become the land of the free is by making it the home of the brave. By killing off most of the brave in 2 world wars meant to keep the world together, our country was left ripe for a fall, since all we left behind were the weaklings who think fighting is never the answer (not even to stop mass murder). The crash in the economy has provided the wake-up call necessary to raise most people from their contented slumber. Obama promised they could go back to sleep, but things are still bad, so folks are still awake. Now is when the future of the country will be decided: Either those who want us all to go back to living in caves (I had a teacher in College who actually made that statement, so they really do exist) will triumph in their enslavement of the people, or freedom will once again come to this land. For me, I'll die before I become a savage.

As another former Marine who comes from a long line of them (my brother is currently stationed in Japan), I know exactly what you mean. I knew it was going to come to this. It was all too inevitable.

I can't imagine an actual armed revolution occurring in our country and would hate to see it come down to that, but the politicians are starting to leave us with little choice.
I have heard others who are protesting the health care take over, cap and tax and other radical socialists measures and preach PEACEFUL protesting, but I don't see that working. These politicians are dead set against listening to us any longer. They are determined to ram this crap through no matter what we say.
Take health care for example, the polls show more than 50% of Americans opposed to this and they are still moving bills along like those 50% of Americans don't count. The question then becomes when does the time come to revolt in a not so peaceful way?
People will only sit by so long before they will answer this question in a definite way. I hope, no pray the idiots in Congress stop before we get to that point, but the signs don't seem to be indicating they are going to stop.

I have also wondered this very same thing.
