Who Will Tell the People the Truth?

By Robert Ringer - Tuesday, April 7, 2009

Below is a rerun of an article I wrote last May during the primary campaigns. For reasons that will be obvious to you, I felt compelled to rerun this article. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I hate having to say “I told you so.” [Highlighted text and my additional comments speak for themselves.]

Who Will Tell the People the Truth?

By Robert Ringer

Thomas Friedman recently wrote an article in The New York Times titled “Who will tell the people?” Friedman, liberal though he may be, is an outstanding writer and future-oriented thinker. You may know him as the author of The Lexis and the Olive Tree and The World is Flat.

Friedman says “We don’t need a president who is tough enough to withstand the lies of his opponents. We need a president who is tough enough to tell the truth to the American people. Any one of the candidates can answer the Red Phone at 3 a.m. in the White House bedroom. I’m voting for the one who can talk straight to the American people on national TV — at 8 p.m. — from the White House East Room.”

Which I presume means that Friedman is not planning to vote in the upcoming election. Hello, Thomas. Are you listening? None of the major candidates is tough enough — or honest enough — to tell the American people the truth. None of them has the character to “talk straight” to voters.

I’ve observed more presidential elections than I care to admit to, and I can say unequivocally that, as a group, the current crop of candidates is the most pathetic I have ever seen. It’s like being given a choice of how you would like to die — by firing squad, hanging, or decapitation.

No matter who you vote for this year, the moral and economic decline of the U.S. will continue. Granted, it will happen much faster if Obama is in office than if John McCain is elected. But regardless of who is elected, he/she will preside over more and bigger disasters than any president in history. And since there is no practical way to solve any of the nation’s biggest problems, the next president will receive most of the blame. [RR note: If I'm wrong on this last point, all hope for a return to a semi-free America is lost.]

Friedman says “We are not who we think we are. We are living on borrowed time and borrowed dimes. We still have all the potential for greatness, but only if we get back to work on our country.” Which sounds great, except for one thing. What “working on our country” means is subjective. Candidates like to talk about measures they believe will “work,” but it’s meaningless.

Hey, everything works. To paraphrase Sy Leon, the question is not whether something works but whether we like the way it works. Just because something works doesn’t mean it is desirable.

Communism works, if your purpose is to enslave people. Stealing works (at least some of the time), if all you care about is money. Lying works, if you don’t care about your personal integrity. Literally anything, no matter how monstrously immoral, will work, depending on the outcome you’re going for and how you define the term work.

To be sure, both McCain and Hillary would continue to lead the country down the road to communism, but Obama would take it to its ultimate destination much faster. His perpetually angry wife, who appears to wear the pants in the family, made that abundantly clear when she passed the litmus test for hard-core communists.

The litmus test I am referring to is the ignorant and childish belief that the size of the world’s wealth pie is fixed. In one of her many angry diatribes (which must have had Obama’s handlers trying to figure out ways to muzzle her — the same problem Bill Clinton’s handlers had with Hillary for so many years) — Meanie Michelle said:

“Someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more.” Are you listening, mesmerized voters? The Obamas intend to take more of
your “pie” and give it to those whom they arbitrarily believe are in “need” of it. In politically incorrect circles, this is known as communism — and, as I said, it only works if your purpose is to enslave people.

Communist thinkers are not able to comprehend the simple reality that the economic pie can be expanded indefinitely. In other words, there is no practical limit to the amount of wealth that can be created. Sadly, the greatest obstacle producers have to overcome in trying to increase the size of the economic pie is government intervention in the economy. Politicians would rather play the role of Robin Hood than see people be financially better off.

Taking this to its logical conclusion, the only way to control people — since they ultimately rebel when you try to take too much of their pie — is through the use of force, which often results in a dictatorship. I don’t mind you laughing at that, just so you remember you read it here first.

Now in fairness to the Obamas, Hillary Clinton and John McCain also intend to take more of your pie and give it to those whom they believe to be in need. It’s just that their spouses have the good sense not to talk about it in public.

Having said this, I feel intellectually compelled to respect Michelle Obama for being honest. She has a far bigger set of testiculos than her husband. He’s been very careful not to explain how he intends to rearrange the pie. Instead, this ultra-slick politician has wrapped himself in the American flag and talks in clichés and generalities.

So, who will tell the people the truth? Answer: No one, because you can’t get elected by doing it. All the candidates are well aware of the fact that there is no constituency for cutting entitlements. They know they have only two choices: Lie or lose. Just ask Ron Paul, who was brushed aside by the media (including Fox News!) and the Republican Party for consistently refusing to deceive voters.

In a free country, of course, you have a right to go on believing whatever you wish to believe. But, at the same time, you should recognize that reality is not discriminatory. Nature does not accept ignorance as an excuse for making wrong decisions. Nature metes out negative consequences just as harshly to a person who is well-meaning but misinformed as to one who is malevolent and stubborn.

As to your own litmus test, ask yourself this question: “Instead of listening to the three major candidates crack jokes on Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show, and the Late Show With David Letterman, do I have the courage to focus on what is really happening to this country — morally, culturally, and economically?” [RR note: The winner is still spending his time cracking jokes on the late-night talk shows! And, worse, a majority of Americans are eating it up.]

If the answer is no — if you are so hopelessly mesmerized by one of the presidential candidates that you can’t bring yourself to hear the truth — rest assured that that, too, will work. Because, as I said earlier, everything works. The only question is how well will it work — and for whom? [RR note: We are now in the process of getting the answer to this question, and it's almost certain to be a bad one for most Americans.]

Just know that the clock is ticking on American (and Western) civilization, and you can be sure that it will start to tick much faster come next January. [RR note: Forgive my understatement. I should have said, "much, much faster."]

“Who Will Tell The People The Truth?”

Perhaps it is best to answer this question with a question; why tell people the truth when they don’t want the truth, and they may hate you for speaking it? Remember the biblical story of Jesus. He supposedly told the truth and look what happened to him. He was crucified. Now, over 2000 years later, nothing has changed in human nature. Many people still want to be beguiled. The offspring of humankind and those who killed Jesus have the exact same mental posture as their forefathers. Is it any real surprise then, that people voted in a beguiler as president?

Beguiling people “works.” The serpent charmed Eve with a lie, did he not? The lie “works” and has been working for a very long long time. We do well to remember: if the truth is pleasurable, the messenger is loved; however, if the truth is painful, then the messenger is hated (with a few rational exceptions.)

It is not surprising that throughout thousands of years of history, with a few exceptions, that the lies have “worked” and liars ruled most of the world. What is surprising is that for the very brief time between 1776-2009 that a measure of truth, liberty, and a principled republic has survived. What is so very poignantly ironic is the fact that democracy was the means by which freedom was derived and democracy is now the current means by which freedom is being destroyed.

How in the world and God’s name could democracy destroy freedom you ask? I will let F.A. Hayek answer from his book, “The Constitution Of Liberty.”

“The current undiscriminating use of the word ‘democratic’ as a general term of praise is not without danger. It suggests that, because democracy is a good thing, it is always a gain for mankind if it is extended………….Democracy is not necessarily unlimited government. Nor is a democratic government any less in need of built-in safeguards of individual liberty than any other. It was, indeed, at a comparatively late stage in the history of modern democracy that great demagogues began to argue that since the power was now in the hands of the people, there was no longer any need for limiting that power. It is when it is contended that in a democracy right is what the majority makes it to be that democracy degenerates into demagoguery.”

The above scenario is what is happening right now before our very eyes. Democracy is being “degenerated into demagoguery” and liberty is being disintegrated by demagogues who pride themselves as “democratic.” Individuals such as Senator Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator Chuck Schumer, Congressman Barney Frank, Congressman Charles Rangel, and many others are willing to tell people what they want to hear even if it’s a lie. They have made a political career of trading lies for votes.

Just as a gun can be used for both murder or self-preservation, depending on whom it is controlled by and why; so too, democracy, can be used to kill liberty or preserve it, depending on the intentions of the people and the goals of their leaders. Democracy is simply a means to an end, not an end in and of itself. Democracy “works” well only if its purpose is thoroughly understood. That purpose is to serve liberty. Understanding how democracy is supposed to serve liberty should be the aim of every American.

Perhaps the biggest Demagogue that I will ever see in my lifetime is now president. It is my educated guess that Obama will employ massive amounts of demagoguery to achieve his goals.

In conclusion, I’d like to offer these words penned by Henry David Thoreau over a hundred and fifty years ago, “If I knew for certain that a man was coming to my house with a conscious design of doing me good, then I would run for my life.” Mr. Thoreau understood liberty and the individualism it was based on. He had the right mental posture.

Nowadays, people hope, pray, beg and even demand that someone show up at their door to do them some sort of good. This type of poor attitude(aka mental posture) is what leaves them wide open to be beguiled by a demagogue like Obama. Obama, the man and the so called “community organizer” who shows up at the door “with a conscious design of doing good” —–look out! And RUN if you know what’s good for you and your children.

Now Obama is the most powerful man in the world, and he has even bigger “designs of doing good”—— whether we want [good] done to us or not.

Until the majority of people don’t want to be lied to anymore and they start to understand that we have to run for our life, so to speak, when the do-goods and community organizers show up and offer us [free] help; until this concept is firmly grasped, liberty is forever in jeopardy.

I believe every word of what you said, the first, second, and this time-third time. My only question is What can we (the American People) do about it?
Have the TEA Parties worked? Is there someone who will hold the President and His Liberal Cronies feet to the fire? Can we prosecute them for bringing our country to a Socialistic Nation? Can we Prosecute them for being in flagrant violation of the Constitution? Czars?!!! There is no balance of power with the Czars. Congress should have stopped this effort. I know that BHO is not the first to have a czar, but he has to be stopped. And how can we the American People have a change in the White House such as Limited Terms?
I thought that the Government was “of the people, by the people and For the People.” If that is so, why does Congress have separate Health Care, and seperate Retirement Packages? If they are of us, and for us, why don’t we have the same package?
    Michael

    Two comments:
    1) Ron Paul – I like Ron Paul. He is a good fiscal conservative. He is more of a social moderate and an ostrich on foreign policy. If you have a problem and contact his office they will go to the wall for you. His honesty is EXACTLY what kept him out of the presidency. Mostly because the country doesn’t feel that his isolationist foreign policy ideas are relevant in today’s world. secondly because of his voting record… they don’t call him “Doctor No” for nothing (yes a bit of a pun, there). As one of his constituents, and a neighbor, I admire his honesty and zeal to help his constituents, but I regret his inability to represent ME and his other constituents when bills are brought before the house that WE THE PEOPLE want to vote YES on. Can you imagine a president who ALWAYS VETOES EVERY BILL BROUGHT BEFORE HIM????? Of course, not. And that brings be to point…
    2) “[RR note: The winner is still spending his time cracking jokes on the late-night talk shows! And, worse, a majority of Americans are eating it up.]” I would like to take deference to that. I think the MEDIA wants us to believe a majority are eating it up, when in fact, the numbers are not so rosy. Just yesterday (09/28/09) Rasmussen released a poll that places BHO’s rating on healthcare at 41% approval; only 13% strongly approving. The strongly disapprove number were twice that. When our elected officials IGNORE the wishes and views of their constituents they are doomed to repeat the 1994 slaughter of incumbents. The congressional and media ignoring miles of thickly packed protesters (I don’t know the numbers because they were so poorly reported, but it could be anywhere from 30,000 to 1.5 million+, more likely the latter than the former) and angry town-hall meeting constituents sends the communist’s message that you, the voter/citizen/taxpayer are inconsequential in their eyes. Even the NY Times has un-interpreted the 1994 congressional change over incorrectly as “the result of the Clinton Administration not passing health care reform.” No, little Virginia, the reason the congress rolled over was that they DIDN’T LISTEN WHEN THEIR CONSTITUENTS SPOKE!!!!!

Boy, am I looking forward to 2010!

Good point by Reality Speaker on “people doing good”.
