Valkyrie, Socrates, and You, Part I
If you haven’t yet seen Valkyrie, the Tom Cruise film about the best-known of the fifteen or so plots to kill Adolf Hitler, it’s worth the general discomfort of a trip to your nearby overpriced popcorn and candy store (a.k.a. “theater”). Better yet, you can wait a few weeks, get it on DVD, and make your own popcorn.
Hollywood often comes up short when making films based on novels or true stories. Tom Wolfe’s Bonfire of the Vanities was a classic example of this. If you read the novel, then saw the film, you had to be disappointed.
One of the reasons that filmmakers fail when attempting to recreate novels and true stories on celluloid is that they almost always add a little schmaltz to the mix. The other is that they seem to believe subtlety is a virtue, which can make it difficult to follow the plot.
I had no problem on that score with Valkyrie, but only because I had seen The History Channel’s recent documentary Valkyrie: The Plot to Kill Hitler. In the event you saw this splendid presentation, I can tell you, in advance, that the movie doesn’t live up to it.
What I especially liked about the documentary was the part that began where the film left off. After Col. Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) and his co-conspirators were captured and executed, The History Channel went on to discuss their posthumous evolution from traitors to heroes in thought-provoking detail.
Hitler, in his best propagandist mode, referred to the Valkyrie plotters as “a tiny clique of criminally stupid officers.” His denunciations were heard loud and clear throughout Germany, and if there’s one thing we know about human beings, most of them, sadly, tend to believe whatever those in power tell them.
Thus, for many years after their executions, the conspirators were viewed by the general public as traitors. However, as Germany settled into becoming a civilized society, it slowly came to grips with the monstrous crimes Hitler and the Nazis had committed. As a result, public sentiments about the plot shifted dramatically and the men involved in it were increasingly viewed as heroes.
Ultimately, the Bendlerblock building in Berlin, where Hitler had the conspirators executed, became a national memorial site. Today, the inscription on the symbolic statue in the courtyard of the building reads: “Here in the former Army High Command, Germans organized the attempt to overthrow the lawless National Socialist regime on July 20, 1944. For this they sacrificed their lives.”
It’s too bad the movie left all this out, because there are several major messages here. First and foremost, whether one is a traitor (or “terrorist”) or a patriot (or hero) is very much determined by time and circumstances. Hitler had nearly a year to ingrain in the minds of his subjects the belief that von Stauffenberg and his cohorts were traitors of the worst kind.
So, to me, the most inspiring part of the Valkyrie story is that, in the end, truth prevailed: Hitler was reviled by the masses, and those who tried to overthrow him were (and are) looked upon as patriots and heroes.
Perhaps the Valkyrie conspirators were well versed in the life of Socrates. To the bitter end, Socrates never retracted his unpopular statements. And to the bitter end, the Valkyrie heroes never wavered in their determination to put an end to Hitler’s madness.
But history has a nasty habit of repeating itself. Today, Germans, like their counterparts in the U.S., have once again become “sheeple.” Instead of Patrick Henry’s rallying cry of “Give me liberty or give me death,” the only thing on their minds is “Give me!”
And when the tax-producing productivity and the borrowing capacity of a nation can no longer meet all of the sheeple’s demands, the gate swings open for the next Il Duce or Fuhrer to enter. Why? Because then there is only one “solution”: Running the fiat-currency printing presses overtime.
As suicidal government practices continue to destroy what’s left of the U.S. economy, intrude on our liberties, and forever change our cultural landscape, look for words like traitor and unpatriotic to become more and more popular. Our benevolent new vice president has already made it clear that paying taxes is patriotic. From which one is forced to conclude that anyone who believes taxes should be lower is unpatriotic.
Which makes just about everything a target in the traitor game:
- Will you be considered a traitor if you’re against handing over a portion of your earnings to autoworkers so they can remain employed for a while longer?
- Will you be considered a traitor if you’re against the government’s launching another unprovoked war?
- Will you be considered a traitor if you speak out against the possibility of Congress implementing another “Fairness Doctrine”?
Answer: Most probably. But the Valkyrie segment of your brain should never forget that one man’s traitor is another man’s patriot. All liberty lovers should keep this in mind as the rhetoric and name calling heat up in the months and years ahead.
In Part II of this article, I’m going to change gears and discuss how the valor of the Valkyrie heroes can be applied on a much more personal level.

Don’t raise taxes on those who can maybe afford it like the bankers and brokers and such who just got a bail-out and don’t seem to have to account for what was given them. Turn the auto-makers out to the street and if they can’t find any work I say round them up and put them in camps till they prove they can be productive in the trickle-down commercial society.
If they behave will the bankers trickle down on them?

Yes the United States is fast becoming another Nazi Germany. I think ou are an honest enough person to look in the mirror and see your blindness in this. You bitterly complained about Bill Clinton. You are complaining about Obama although he has yet to take office. Yet the man who has made it most likely we will become Nazi Germany, you had two things. George Bush. You sid in one column whether you like Bush or not at least he takes bold action. The othr thing you sid which othr pointed out the evil actions Bush has taken you said. I want to tak about Obama/McCain because Bush is a lame duck as so the things he did doesn’t matter.
First, the reason Hitler was admired in Germany is because he did take bold action. I doubt you liked the action because while I don’t know your family history I think it affect you or your family in some horrible way. Second, people excused the action he did take even when they were clear was they were saying, Hitler will be out of office or dead soon because germany is losing the war.
If you want to get us off the path to Nazi Germany, then you will have to have the courage to admit your blindness to Geogre Bush. Once you can do that, other seeing your courage will have the courage to see where they were blind or wrong. It might not be George Bush where they wee wrong. It might be thinking it is too late to say or do anything. It might be they think govrnment works, or it might be admiting they were wrong. I think this is yet you’ve taken the position you took on George Bush that you did. Because it would be too hard to admit to yourself how wrong you were.
As less give this reply some thought.
Thank You, looking forward to part II.
Everyone can be a hero if dedicated
Robert,
As usual, you delightfully expand the consciousness of intelligent, receptive individuals.
Authentic heroes and patriots possess a precious trait that unfortunately most people lack—impeccable integrity. Our once great nation is suffering terrible consequences of monumental proportions because of a severe shortage of this critical, life-enhancing trait.
Tragically, we are a nation of people who have lost the vision. We are destroying the very foundation our founding fathers created—the foundation of individualism and free enterprise. What took centuries to build, built with wisdom, ingenuity and hard work, is being torn asunder in a blink of an eye.
Instead of people knowing and understanding that they are only entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness—they believe they possess a right to entitlements—that they can live at the expense of others. And of course “Big Brother” and his squad of altruists (politicians) have open up a mall—a mall supplied with stolen goods—goods pilfered from hard-working, productive citizens. All who desire unearned benefits, who refuse to trade value for value, are welcome.
Who is the true patriot of The American Way of Life? The person who supports futile foreign excursions and government interventions that are destroying our economic system—or those freedom loving individuals who support Laissez faire (unhampered) capitalism and advocate the sanctity of an individual’s life, liberty and property.

To answer the questions posted in the article- yes, I will be considered a traitor for thinking that, as I will for speaking out against those things. I am prepared for the results, though I don’t look forward to them. As to Bush making us into Nazi Germany, all he did was open the door. When a President chooses to run roughshod over the congress, the Congress has its seats for sale in at least one case, and the justice system has become a court of law, not justice, with the masses choosing what is right or wrong for everyone, the nation becomes ripe for transformation. In the case of the US, we will most likely try Socialism, because everyone who has gone to public school knows it’s the best way. That it isn’t makes no difference, the masses have been told it is, so it is. Thanks to some lovely psychology experiments that have been done, we can all rest assured that when those in authority tell our neighbors to burn us alive, they will do so. I can’t wait for all the great changes Comrade Obama will bring.
“and if there’s one thing we know about human beings, most of them, sadly, tend to believe whatever those in power tell them.”{
This pretty much explains why America is in decline and democracy has been diminishing. Earlier in Americas founding people were not always like this hence they started a country like America. So this “leadership” has been able to get away with alot ie… no accountability and more corruption while the sheeple look on.

Yes, it is sad that most people tend to believe whatever those in power tell them.
In his magnificent book on economics, Ludwig von Mises stated that most people lack the ability to engage in a lengthy chain of reasoning. In fact most of them parrot-like repeat what they have heard from other people–people who are even less informed than they are. Is it any wonder that the media and the political establishment captured the minds of the masses?
The future of our once great nation is rather bleak–unless libertarians and other lovers of liberty and freedom become more effective at conveying the benefits of Laissez faire capitalism.

Mr. Meyer-
You have to understand, to the public, there ARE no benefits! To succeed in a laissez-faire system, you have to be productive, which means taking action and making decisions. Right now, people don’t have to make any decisions, their decisions are made for them by Congress and the President. Bush didn’t throw any money at them, so they hate him. Obama has promised them money hand over fist, the more irresponsible they’ve been, the better! Most people in the US now would prefer a form of slavery to freedom, since freedom comes with no guarantees that they will have everything they want. In fact, they can be almost positive that they won’t be able to have all of their dreams fulfilled, because it is impossible in the real world. Politicians like Obama can help them avoid reality for a little longer, and when they have to face reality, Obama will give them a good scapegoat to blame it on. This nation is done for. The time has come to decide between fight or flight. Fight, and you face overwhelming odds. Flee, and you only go somewhere that’s maybe 10 years behind us, if that. There are no good choices left.

I guess I was using the terms “benefits” from a libertarian point of view. I have to admit that you are correct in your analysis of what “benefits” mean to the public. They want something for nothing. They expect someone to deliver that something to them. And they’ll only support those dishonest enough to supply it.
Sometimes it is hard to accept the fact that most people want someone else to make their decisions for them. Maybe you’re right. The nation is done for. How tragic. However, I think I prefer fight to flight.
