The World’s Silliest Question
As the media and left-wing “slobbering love affair†(as Bernard Goldberg puts it in the title of his new book) reaches orgasmic heights today, maybe those of us who have not yet bought into the idea that Abraham Lincoln has been reincarnated should work hard at keeping our intellectual composure.
Just when you thought that Bill O’Reilly could not possibly outdo his rants about limiting oil company profits (You do remember high oil prices, don’t you?), he asks his viewers to answer a question that probably would not have made the cut on Wheel of Fortune: “Are you rooting for Barack Obama to succeed?â€
Hmm … maybe … just maybe … the term succeed needs to be defined for us. As it now stands, O’Reilly’s profound question exists in a vacuum. Succeed at what?
At printing up trillions of fiat dollars and continuing to bail out companies that are “too big to fail
At creating millions of synthetic jobs through “public works†programs that put other people out of work?
At “spreading the wealth†by increasing taxes on those Obama deems to be “richâ€
At silencing conservative talk radio through another version of the “Fairness Doctrine
At overriding the Second Amendment and fulfilling the decades-old left-wing dream of disarming the population by stripping citizens of their natural right to bear arms?
At growing the size of government through a “new New Deal†in the belief that politicians and bureaucrats can, and should, solve the problems of individuals?
At reinstituting the draft?
You or I could come up with a much longer list, but I think you get the idea. If the above are examples of what one thinks of as “success,†then, no, I don’t want Obama to succeed. Nor would I want anyone else to succeed at objectives that violate our God-given rights and limit our liberties.
There are all kinds of successes. Some burglars are successful at their craft. Some who engage in human trafficking are successful at it. Some pedophiles are successful at carrying out their disgusting objectives. And most school bullies are successful at getting away with making life miserable for their most vulnerable classmates.
Hitler succeeded — by some people’s standards. Mussolini succeeded — by some people’s standards. Stalin succeeded — by some people’s standards. Ditto Ho Chi Minh, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, and Pol Pot. But none of them were successful by my standards — nor, in all likelihood, by yours. So, when you really think about it, asking if you want Barack Obama to succeed is pretty silly.
I believe that most people want to see African-Americans succeed, at least subconsciously. I call it psychic affirmative action — governmental interference not necessary, thank you. In my opinion, psychic affirmative action is a good thing, so long as it isn’t taken to a slobbering extreme that has more to do with white guilt than sincere goodwill.
We all love to see the underdog overcome great obstacles and make it to the top. And for hundreds of years — even after given their freedom — no one was a bigger underdog than African-Americans. From Frederick Douglass to the Tuskegee Airmen to Bill Cosby, black success stories are truly inspiring.
So, in all honesty, I understand the hysteria over the idea of a man who is half black and (let’s not forget) half white ascending to the presidency. It’s quite natural. But, unfortunately, in this case most people are acting on emotion. And basing one’s actions on emotion is generally an unhealthy way to operate one’s life.
Electing a president is serious business, yet millions of voters clearly did not take that task seriously in the recent election. Rather, I believe they acted on the emotional excitement of having a “black†president. And today they are caught up in the emotional euphoria of it all.
But discharging the duties of the President of the United States is not about color; it’s about protecting people’s lives and property. It’s about preserving liberty. There are African-Americans who believe in these ideals, and there are African-Americans who do not.
I would love to see Barack Obama succeed at putting an end to handing out trillions of dollars in fiat currency to Wall Street firms, major banks, and other “too-big-to-fail†companies. I would love to see Barack Obama succeed at standing up to Queen Pelosi and implement conservative fiscal and economic policies. I would love to see Barack Obama succeed at canning his FDR copycat plan of creating public works’ programs and, instead, allow the free market to sort out the mess the government has created.
If I see him moving in those directions, you can bet that I’ll be cheering him on. But I believe he’s made it clear that he most decidedly intends to move in the direction of more and more fiat currency, more borrowing, higher taxes, and less liberty for all but those who are part of the Beltway Power Structure.
So, before you decide whether or not you want Barack Obama to succeed, you would be wise to define what, exactly, it is that you want him to succeed at. Don’t be intimidated by today’s feel-good, “patriotic†mantra: “We all have to come together as Americans.â€
Keep your head when those around you are losing theirs, and recognize that such Orwellian doublespeak is but a euphemism for: “You hard cases who still believe in capitalism and individual liberty are morally obliged to join us in moving our socialist agenda forward. And if you don’t, you’re unpatriotic.â€
Why, none other than Shepherd Smith told me just a short time ago (through my TV screen, of course) that “Today is a great day for democracy.†Sorry, Shep, but I’m not buying into that one — even though I’m sure that John “Reach Across the Aisle†McCain must have been smiling and bobbing his head up and down when you said it.
I prefer to fight on for the real thing, and I hope you feel the same way. If we’re lucky enough to have free elections in 2012, perhaps another person of color — one who believes in small government and the sanctity of the individual — will win the presidency. Now that would be a man or woman I would want to see succeed.
But to get there, millions of people are going to set aside their emotionally based delusions and to be rational enough and strong enough not to buy into the massive, ongoing brainwashing campaign that is about to begin. Be prepared!

Robert,
Most of Americans live in a world of illusion. Since it is apparent that the Bush administration couldn’t transform their illusions into reality, they turn their hopeful gaze onto Barack Obama.
These evaders of reality fervently believe Obama can somehow transmute faulty economic theory—economic theory that stomps on all logic and reality—into a horn of plenty that dispenses to them all of their fantasies and desires.
Yes, they want Obama to succeed. They want him succeed by forever eliminating the harsh reality of cause and effect relationships. Obama is a smashing success if he proves once and for all that you can have your cake and eat it too—that you become wealthy by frivolously spending more money than you earn—that acting irrationally selfish guarantees that you enjoy health, wealth and prosperity—and that social altruism unleashes a new era of peace and harmony for all.
Maybe we should feel bad for Obama—and wonder what fate has in store for him when it becomes obvious that what many hopeless dreamers expect him to accomplish is beyond the capacity of any mortal man. And if Obama actually believes he can save America with worn-out socialist philosophy and massive government interventions on the marketplace—–.
Robert A. Meyer
I find it rather amusing that Obama’s being set up for a fall and people don’t know it. All this praise and expectation that’s being laid on him…it’s just going to make it all the more painful when and if he can’t live up to it.
It’s rather frightening to me how ever increasing numbers of sheeple are getting sucked into the groupthink of the left. I have long thought that George Orwell’s prescient novel “1984″ should be required reading for high school graduation. In the book, Orwell tried to warn us of what was to come. Because we ignored those warnings, we now have equivalents to many of the bureaucratic functions he described. For example the Ministry of Information, which is a propaganda machine disseminating disinformation and rewriting history books, exists today in the form of the mainstream media, which is nothing more than a propaganda machine for the far left in this country. And of course the academics are constantly rewriting history texts through the distorted lens of their ideology. Do our children stand a chance against such an onslaught?
I’m still at a loss as to how we can counter this mass brainwashing. Stay away from the Kool Aid!
Excellent article! It is now posted at http://www.aipnews.com.
Hello, Robert!
Heck of a rant – made this tortoise-wannabe shrink back from fears of ‘absolute moralitis’! After 30-plus years as an adult trying to change the world, I finally learned we don’t make the rules, we just play the game…
So in keeping with looking out for #1, ‘Salute the flag, whatever flag they offer’ and then use your amazing acuity, insight & energy to better your life and better protect those you love from whatever the current and impending storm clouds may be the harbingers of.
No politician, of any political stripe, is going to think of your best interest or mine, nor will any have the foresight to craft an intelligent, harmless milieu where all can prosper.
Here in Canada, we elect a new dictator every four years – your system is much the same, but with a few more checks & balances. Yet the story is the same – spend the next four years complaining, or use the energy productively.
Something your writings taught me back in the 70′s, and for that I thank you again. Maybe time we BOTH re-read those…
To you continued success, with much respect & admiration…

The beginning of the 44th presidency and its “success” reminds me of Jimmy Carter’s 39th: America was suffering the after-effects of an expensive war, a bad economy, an energy crisis, a weak stock market, and an overall disgust with the Republican Party— kind of like what’s happening now. President Carter, like number 44, was suppose to turn it all around. He was a man of the people, somebody the common individual could relate to— somebody who wore blue jeans in the White House. Yes, Carter was a man just like you and I, that is, if you and me were the type that believed government could solve more problems than it created. The hopes and dreams of that time were about as high as the soaring rhetoric was— very. Perhaps history is once again “rhyming.”
I hope things turn out different this time around, but I won’t be holding my breath. It’s my educated guess, that the second term Jimmy Carter didn’t receive will be realized by a new generation of socialists and community organizers led by number 44 who has now been promoted from a community organizer to country [organizerer]. For him, this will be like “herding cats,” big cats, as in rabid lions and tigers. I’m sorry to throw verbal ice water on all the warm and fuzzy optimism surrounding number 44, but optimism without a realistic plan is nothing more than a false hope.
Yes, history is being made: but maybe not the kind the collectivist masses think. It seems that the gradualism that F.A. Hayek spoke about is accelerating exponentially right before our eyes into something like greased lightning. Important history is being made, but few are taking note. Why? Maybe it’s partly because of the dis-education that the mainstream news analysts and commentators have received in school aka [ The Dis-Education System].
Really, these free press guardians of The Republic and Democracy are hardly worth watching on T.V.. I think reading Henry David Thoreau is time better spent; he said something that is applicable to not only the news professionals but to our generation as a whole; “for every one man that is chopping at the root, a thousand are swinging at the leaves.”
Socialism, its leaders, and many of those who report always seem to expend more effort on the “leaves” of an inveterate problem than they do on the root cause. Case in point: When will people ever learn that actions which have a painful consequence; resulting from a deliberate choice, should not be lessened by spreading the pain and/or the costs associated with the pain around to those individuals who have chosen a less painful, wiser, and/or more enriching alternative. Let the self inflicted pain take its course, let it educate, and let it serve as a reminder. Socialists love to reward bad choices by spreading the wealth and the pain around, while exempting themselves from such redistribution systems. Those who support redistribution really support swinging at the leaves of a problem. Those who support and encourage the principle of allowing actions to have their natural consequences are chopping at the root.
In my opinion, the entire system will probably fail before real change can be established. And just what does [one] look for as a sign of an imminent nationwide system failure of our government? In a word. *Hyperinflation*. A totally out of control hyperinflation that destroys the almighty dollar is what to watch for. As long as the dollar survives and trillions can be printed up in record amounts at ever increasing blinding speeds, than we can all “muddle through” as one big socialist village; and number 44, along with number 42′s wife and friends, with all their socialist ideals, will have a measure of [success].
By the way, one thing that the inauguration of number 44 has proven without a doubt is this: millions upon millions of the naive masses are still very quick to gulp down the flood of specious, idealistic, and collectivist rhetoric which the entire country is now swimming in. In fact, at this point in time, it’s a very good thing that we human turtles can float without drowning in all the “intimidating Orwellian doublespeak” that’s flooding the country and all the coercive rhetoric that’s sure to follow.
Thanks again Mr. Ringer for another insightful blog.
It’s great that Obama is talking about “togetherness and unity” but it seems that he and most others are perpetuating divisiveness and separatism, and racism, by referring to himself and others as “African-Americans.” Why can’t he and others call themselves Americans?? If they need to make some differentiation, call people “white Americans” and “black Americans”. Few are from Africa… most are born citizens of the United States of America, and should be proud of it!
Reality Seeker—you’re absolutely correct. I was just telling my teenaged son last night that the euphoria surrounding this incoming president reminds me of the love affair everyone had with Jimmy Carter. We have a world full of lemmings, blissful lemmings who think they are the smart ones because the talking heads on the flat screens confirm they are following the correct head lemming. It has been that way my whole life and for centuries before. It is true, there is nothing new under the sun. I just hope we can survive this bout with lemming lunacy.
I read Mr. Ringers first 3 books when they came out. So I know how he feels about goverment regulatory agencys, but I would like to offer this argument.
Capiatlism is like fire controled it can heat your house and cook your food. Uncontroled it burns down the house and consumes everything it comes in contact with.
I hope President Obama sucseeds in harrnessing the power of free markets, I hope he can restrain corperate greed so stock holders can start getting decent dividends again.
I whole hearted agree with Mr. Ringer on this one point. Printing a trillion dollars of phoney money is going to bring on hyper inflation which is going to make the situation much worse.
I have ton of respect for Robert Ringer his book looking out for # 1 took me from being a loser to being a winner 30 years ago, but when people will not tolerate any checks on their rights and freedoms. Rights and freedoms become the possion of a savage few. Thank you please excuse my spelling errors.
I guess I always expected to see people protesting in the streets at some point beyond the 60′s. I wonder if anyone will have the ability to do so by the time this regime is finished? I always believed that at the time of great need, someone would “come to the rescue” and bring sanity to the government of this country. But then again, I also believed that the weight of the job would have a beneficial impact upon the behavior of the person in the highest office. I have no illusions left. Reality Seeker, you make so many good points. And Robert Ringer, I remember you as a voice of reason from way back. Thanks for continuing the dialogue.
I don’t know if there really is as much pro-black mania in the US as you are making out, i sincerely hope not, over here in the UK many of us are sincerely delighted to have Obama as president, not as an expression of affimative action, but because we see a man with his heart and head and soul together in one piece, a rarety indeed for politicians, not to mention us presidents. So halleluhiah for that, at least. Also, we are less brain-washed against so-called ‘socialism’ and prefer a middle view, towards stability that delivers results, now no one can say what results its true, but love i believe will have its day, and in a practical, no-nonsense way also
Geez Robert. It seems that for all of your success and all of your wisdom that at this stage of your life you have a burr up your rear about just about everything; starting out with a chip on your shoulder that no one can touch because you are untouchable.
I appreciate the fact that you are working to educate us about the threats we face and I am not an Obama fan, so please don’t think that I’m apologizing for him here – this refers to almost all of your posts and prior to that your emails.
You just sound like a grumpy old codger with physical ailments that make him irritable and who takes it out on everything and everyone.
Still … I love ya man!
