The Justification for Lying, Part III: Economic Meltdown

By Robert Ringer - Wednesday, November 19, 2008

There are a number of reasons why I don’t believe Barack Obama will use the boil-the-frog-slowly approach when it comes to moving his Marxist agenda forward in the midst of this economic meltdown.

First, he will have the Pelosi-Reid gang pushing him to take action.

Second, he will have millions of welfare addicts — pitchforks in hand — looking to him to deliver on his promises. (Perhaps you’ve seen the video of the gal who said she’s excited now that Obama has been elected, because she will no longer have to worry about paying her mortgage or filling her gas tank.)

Third is the ultimate wild card — Rev. Wright. He’s already come out of hiding, but what does he want? What will he say in the months ahead? Will he expose Obama as a fraud with whom he had scores of revolutionary talks over the years? If I were Obama, I would be very nervous about the intentions of the good reverend.

But the fourth, and greatest, reason I believe Obama will choose to move fast is the pressure of knowing that even the best of presidents usually face a big upheaval (via mid-term Congressional elections) two years after they take office. And if there is a significant power shift in the House and Senate, Obama could miss his chance to ram his socialist medicine down the throats of giddy Americans who are still fluttering their eyelashes skyward at the mere mention of his name.

Obama’s problem is that his explosion of bailouts, handouts, and regulations virtually guarantee to accelerate the current economic meltdown. He has already begun to lay the groundwork for what I’m sure he realizes will be the end result of his draconian policies by saying: “We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America — I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you — we as a people will get there.”

Get where? This stuff is right out of Eric Hoffer’s The True Believer. An emphasis on the future has been an important tool used by crusaders for centuries. So long as success is projected far into the future, dedication to the cause can be justified. The fewer results a revolutionary leader promises in the present and the more he promises in the future, the better his chances of maintaining control of his flock.

The public will not give Obama more than two years to continue blaming the mess he inherited on the Bush administration (as though the Democratic Congress had nothing to do with it). That is why he must not only move fast, but also continue to emphasize that it will take a long time to straighten things out.

In the meantime, Obama is urging us to “come together and work in a nonpartisan fashion to change America.” Cute. In other words, forget about freedom, forget about free markets, forget about individual sovereignty, and join with him to remake America into a Marxist nation. It would be laughable if not for the fact that I’ve already heard many “conservatives” urging people to join forces with the new president to build a “better America.”

If Obama does take the true-believer route, there is a good chance he will try to declare emergency powers for himself as the economic meltdown continues to spin rapidly out of control. Which means those of us who understand what is happening will have to move quickly to expose the truth to as many people as possible.

If we can make it to 2012 and actually be able to hold free and fair elections, I would think that the economic realities of a spread-the-wealth, bail-everyone-out policy would likely result in Obama and his Congressional mischief-making allies being put out to pasture for a long time.

Did that last comment bring a hopeful smile to your face? Not so fast. Even if hard-core freedom advocates gained control of the presidency and the Congress in 2012, they’d still have to have the courage to tell Americans the truth: The party is over!

Then, one by one, they would have to start eliminating every government program that is not called for in the Constitution. Which means that Republicans would have to do a one-eighty from their decades of trying to mimic and outbid Democrats for votes.

Now don’t go getting depressed on me. We’re going to need you to help spread the word when America really starts falling apart. What word? That it is not the government’s moral or legal obligation — not its job — to solve people’s problems. Unfortunately, in the latest poll I saw on Fox, 53 percent of Americans believe the government should do more to help people.

With that in mind, if you thrive on a good challenge, the one that’s ahead of us is hard to top.

I have long (last few weeks)thought this may be our last free election. In my opinion there is a good chance Obama will declare emergency powers or Marshall law to maintain control.

Will education be the key to reversing the collapse of the American culture? Will a “spread the word” message resonate with enough people to affect true change, that is, change that solidifies our economic standing as a country? Education is effective only for those who DESIRE knowledge and are willing to expend effort in obtaining knowledge. Unfortunately, those who meet this criteria represent a minority and a small minority at that.

So, what then will change the mindset of people who have long ago abandoned intellect and objectivity? I am afraid only some dramatic event will break people from their slumber. I am reminded of human physiology. To build strength, one must first break down muscle. The actions of lifting, exertion and struggle actually weakens muscle, but also what allows it to rebuild and become stronger. I believe this is analogous to the devolution-evolution this country must endure in order to return to the glory it once enjoyed. I also believe this – a dramatic turn of events versus a gradual awakening – is inevitable.

Oh dear, this is a problem, Robert Ringer has a fantasy idea about what a marxist is. A marxist is not the same as a liberal, or liberal democrat, one can believe in interventionist government without being a marxist. Using that term, particularly in the US, where Marxism is equated on an emotional level with the devil, at a very young age is the lie, so what is, your justification for lying Robert, can you not make your point without having to descend to twisting people’s political preferences into some wierd, and intolerant point of view, that activates American’ predjudices at a deep level, without much thought about what you are saying.

  6. Response to rachellouise:

I agree with you that believing in government intervention does not necessarily make one a Marxist. Marxism is a belief in class struggle as the way to bring about social and economic change, that the capitalist system is doomed to failure, and that, after a “brief” dictatorship esablished by the “proletariat,” a “classless” society will emerge. Whenever I use the terms “Marxism” or “Marxist,” you can assume I have the above definition in mind. I try never to use these terms loosely.

Marxism is a fantasy – a very unpleasant, anti-liberty fantasy – and I suspect that Marx himself came to that conclusion before he died. What amazes me is how many people right here in the United States still seem to believe that a classless society would be ideal. That’s why the media loves to play up the vast difference between the income of workers and that of high-level executives.

The reality? In a truly free society, a worker’s compensation would be determined by whatever an empployer is willing to pay and the worker is willing to accept – without government or union coercion.

On the other hand, a CEO’s income would, should, and, right now, is determined by what a board of directors is willing to pay and what the CEO is willing to accept. The amount they agree upon, no matter how great, is, plain and simple, no else’s business.

BTW, I do, indeed, desire to “twist” people’s political preferences toward freedom and free enterprise. It’s not intolerance that motivates me, but, rather, compassion for people. It is my belief that all people are better off if they are free to pursue their own life, liberty, and happiness.

Sorry if that sounds weird to you, but in today’s insane world, I guess freedom is a weird concept to many. In any event, I appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts with readers.

I believe Obama will have more than the 2 years, as you suggest, to push his agenda. The Republican Party needs to repackage themselves – that’ll take time. The media will remain steadfastly in Obama’s corner. I see an 8 year USA makeover. Viva La France!

  8. rachellouise says:

first of all thankyou for your reply, i was surprised to get one, and you considered what I had to say, I don’t know that I have ever had that happen before, and I felt touched.

In response I understand that your definition of Marxism is accurate, although of course marx’s theory is more than that also. I don’t agree that Obama is aiming for a ‘dicatorship of the proletariat’ or a classless society. I took my degree in political theory, a while ago now, and I get that he isn’t a Marxist.
Apart from anything else he is a Christian, and embraces many aspects of capitalism.

He is closer to a social democrat, we live with this a lot more easily in Europe, and have embraced a more ‘socialist’ if you like way, we certainly don’t consider the word an insult, although most of us would not even consider ourselves anything more than centrist in our approach.
Also, it does seem that Marx did have a fantasy, and that humans could not live his ideal, I wonder how easy it would be for humans to live your ideal of freedom and free interprise, It seems obvious to me that left to their own devices, ‘free market capitalists’ are often greedy, powerful, and corrupt. It seems that all systems need some control somewhere, of course who does the controlling is the question, we need moral leadership, and people in charge with a truly ethical approach, not sure if that has happened before, or at least for a long time, but, maybe, just maybe Obama has that in his heart, and somehow i think that will be the decisive factor, not political persuasion at the end of the day. thanks again for the reply. Have a good day

I seriously doubt that the United Socialist States of America even HAS 8 more years, unfortunately.

  10. Tom D. says:

Financial writer and treasurer of the DNC, Andrew Tobias, made the argument in a June 5, 1998 column (available in his archives at andrewtobias.com) that Libertarians should lighten up when faced with increased government: “I have never met a libertarian of average intelligence. They are always way smart, way capable. The kind of people who would for the most part succeed excellently in a libertarian world — or any other.”

  11. Dwight Kothmann says:

I assure you Pres. Obama will spend an uneasy time in the seat of power. The chances of his success decrease proportionately with the amount of Clinton cronies appointed to positions of power. As for a good nights sleep with Hillary and Bill around, double the guard, lock up the daughters, secure all doors, and watch your wallet. My crystal ball tells me we are going to see some change, and I hope we can survive it. I wish the president elect no harm, but I would certainly be more selective who I appointed for cabinet members if I were he. Lets hope for some Jeffersonians in 2012.

    Regards,

    Dwight Kothmann

  12. BigD says:

“It seems obvious to me that left to their own devices, ‘free market capitalists’ are often greedy, powerful, and corrupt.”

“‘Need’ now means wanting someone else’s money. ‘Greed’ means wanting to keep your own. And ‘Compassion’ is when a politician arranges the transfer.”

    Joseph Sobran

Funny, but those three words usually best describe politicians, who have shown themselves to be little fond of free-market capitalism.

  13. rmeyer says:

    Response to Rachellouise

I agree that a person who advocates government interventionism on the marketplace may not consciously be a Marxist. However it is evident that every single instance of interference with the marketplace takes us that much closer to all-around governmental control of our economy–socialism.

Since all government intervention fails miserably-the interventionist has only 2 choices left. He can repeal the original intervention and refrain from any further interventions–or he can choose to intervene once again–moving us that much closer to a system of socialism. I believe the facts speak for themselves. Politicians always compound the negative effects of their original intervention with more interference on the marketplace.

We can conclude that most of our social and political leaders are closet Marxists-socialists, even if they are not conscious of this fact. This means that Obama is actually a Marxist–whether or not he is conscious of it.
